Ovulation Tests

Fertility can be measured by the hormonal changes that occur around the time of ovulation. Ovulation tests can detect these hormonal changes and let you know when you may be most fertile.

A surge in estrogen just before ovulation causes your saliva to take on a distinct fernlike pattern. This pattern is used in these tests to predict when ovulation will occur. There are two types of saliva tests that indicate ovulation. Saliva fertility monitors read your saliva samples for you with the aid of digital technology. A saliva sample can also be read with the help of a low power microscope available in a kit.

A surge in LH (luteinizing hormone) just before you ovulate can be detected in a urine ovulation test.

Urine ovulation tests are available in two forms. A strip test can be dipped in a collection cup of urine. A test stick can be held in the urine stream.

Determining your fertility can also be done by measuring your body temperature. An increase in body temperature is common after ovulation due to the hormone progesterone.

This method of ovulation monitoring requires you to take and chart your temperature each morning to watch for the increase that indicates ovulation has occurred.

Tests can be purchased individually or in kit form.

Any of these tests can be combined to make a more accurate picture of your ovulation cycle and increase your chances of conception.
